Rock and Roll Lovers, Let Me Put You On Hannah Wicklund

As someone who listens to mostly older music such as classic rock or classic country, I am always delighted when I come across an artist with an older sound. So many classic rock lovers tend to boast about how music just isn’t the same as it used to be, and while that may be the case most of the time, finding artists that prove that statement otherwise has pretty much become a goal and hobby of mine. The latest artist to stop me in my tracks with their older sound and really prove that good rock and roll still exists is Hannah Wicklund.

A while back I was randomly scrolling through social media, as one does, and I came across this video of a woman with long curly hair absolutely rocking the hell out of a guitar and I immediately became obsessed. Sure enough, that woman with the wild hair and old soul was Hannah Wicklund. Once I started to dig into her discography, I knew I had to write about her because anyone who loves rock and roll NEEDS to give her a listen.

For some background, Hannah is from South Carolina and has been living for rock and roll since she was a child. She formed her first band at only eight years old and by the time she was nine she was playing live shows. She graduated from high school early to focus on her music and has been living for music ever since. Hannah performs with a trio called Hannah Wicklund & the Stepping Stones. She has already performed with groups such as St. Paul & the Broken Bones, Rusted Root, and Jason Isbell. She has been putting out music since 2017 starting with her highly praised singles, “Ghost” and “Bomb Through the Breeze” followed by the band’s self titled full-length album in 2018. Following the full length album, she released two EPs, Hannah Wicklund on Audiotree Live (2019) and The Inbetween (2020). Hannah and her band have made several festival appearances and are already confirmed to play at 2022 Peach Fest. She is also said to be dating Sam Kiszka, the bassist from Greta Van Fleet, another band proving that real rock music is still around. I honestly think her and Sam make such a perfect couple and I can only imagine the jam sessions between them. Another interesting fact, Hannah is also an artist and shares her art along with her music on social media.

Since I am always looking for new music and artists to get into, it really takes a lot for an artist to stop me in my tracks and force me to look up all their music. What instantly drew me in to Hannah’s sound was the way she blends her rock and roll sound into influences of blues. The best way I could describe her sound would be a perfect mix of Janis Joplin, Susan Tedeschi, AC/DC, and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. When you listen to her music, you can really feel the appreciation and respect she has for all the classic rock legends and continues to prove that making music is her calling. If you want to give her music a listen and are unsure of where to start, I suggest listening to “Bomb Through The Breeze” and “Strawberry Moon.”

Although Hannah is a seasoned musician since she has been performing for over a decade, she still seems to be very underrated and at the beginning of a very successful career. Discovering her music has made me feel like I came across someone right before they really blow up and boy, do I hope I am right! If you consider yourself to be a lover of classic rock, seriously give Hannah Wicklund’s music a chance, you will be thanking me when her name is everywhere!
