This Not That: Wedding Songs

Wedding season is quickly approaching and those who will soon say “I do” to the love of their life will surly be discussing wedding songs at some point. The songs you choose to play at your wedding, whether walking down the aisle or sharing your first dance, all should hold a special place in your heart and invoke a warm and loving feeling. However, many couples struggle with deciding on a song, or simply love a song that is used maybe a bit too much by people at their weddings and feel deterred. Sometimes couples want to feel like they’re ~different~ and have a wedding song that others may not have even considered. Whatever the situation may be, below are ten song suggestions from the same artist of some of the most popular wedding songs that you may not have even considered:

Tennessee Whiskey -> More of You

Chris Stapleton had everyone feeling in love when he released “Tennessee Whiskey”. This song and the emotions that Chris Stapleton evokes in this song make it one of the most popular first dance songs. However, if you have been to a few weddings where the couple has danced to this song but still want a similar vibe, try “More of You” by Chris Stapleton. “More of You” is one of my favorite love songs and is so delicate and tender. As good of a song it is, I am surprised it isn’t used more for weddings.

The Way You Look Tonight -> Witchcraft

Frank Sinatra has SO MANY love songs that are perfect for a wedding and they are certainly used. However, after looking at many lists, it seems that “The Way You Look Tonight” is the most used song of his for weddings. Although there are many others, I find that his song “Witchcraft” isn’t used quite as much and would be a fun alternative for couples wanting that classic sound but still want to be a bit different than the rest.

Thinking Out Loud -> Tenerife Sea

“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran is one of his most popular songs and had people falling head over heels at the release of it. I have seen it used in many wedding related things but another beautiful love song of his that doesn’t quite get as much credit is “Tenerife Sea”. I mean the first lyric is even “you look so wonderful in your dress” which makes it perfect for a wedding!

You Are The Best Thing -> Trouble

“You Are The Best Thing” is probably in the top five of most popular wedding songs for millennials, and rightfully so! It is such a sweet song with great vibes, but Ray LaMontagne’s catalog has a great selection of love songs. One that I think would be a great alternative for this would be “Trouble”. This is actually the song that made me a Ray LaMontagne fan and I have been obsessed with it ever since, plus it still has an upbeat feel like “You Are The Best Thing”.

Something -> Eight Days a Week

One of the most beloved Beatles songs to exist is probably “Something” and it makes for a perfect wedding song. For Beatles fans that maybe want to have a different vibe for their wedding but still represent their love of The Beatles could consider the song “Eight Days a Week”. Although the vibes are a bit different between the two songs, “Eight Days a Week” would be such a fun and upbeat option to include in your special day.

Songbird -> As Long As You Follow

“Songbird” is known as one of Fleetwood Mac’s slower songs, but it is adored by many and has the ability to be tender, sad, and sweet all at the same time, representing a sort of selfless love. For Fleetwood Mac lovers who want to feature their favorite band in their wedding but have a hard time deciding due to the large selection of heartbreak songs or want something a bit more upbeat than “Songbird”, consider “As Long As You Follow”. With Christine McVie’s lovely voice and the smooth melody, it would make for a wonderful wedding song.

Sky Full of Stars -> The Scientist

With an extensive selection of songs, Coldplay’s most popular love song used at weddings is “Sky Full of Stars”. This song is so sweet and has a great upbeat and happy feeling to it. But if you are a Coldplay fan and want something a little more toned down and slower, I would highly recommend “The Scientist”. These two songs absolutely have different vibes but “The Scientist” is such a beautiful song for the couple that wants a more emotional edge to their wedding.

At Last -> If I Can’t Have You

“At Last” is another one of those songs that will be on the top of every wedding song list and I 100% understand why. Etta James puts her heart and soul into this song that has continued to be adored by generations. For a couple that wants to bring that classic bluesy feeling to their celebration but doesn’t want to use a song that so many others have used before, I suggest they give “If I Can’t Have You” a chance. Etta James sounds just as great on this song and is accompanied by Harvey Fuqua, which makes it even better for a wedding since it is a duet.

I Cross My Heart -> Carried Away

George Strait is another one of those artists that has an extensive selection of love songs to the point that it can almost be overwhelming, but “I Cross My Heart” happens to be the one most used for weddings. Understandably so since the couple is making a vow to each other in front of everyone. If this song isn’t your vibe or maybe you have heard it too many times at weddings, another alternative with a similar feeling would be “Carried Away”.

Can’t Help Falling In Love -> The Wonder of You

Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love” is one of those songs that will continue to top wedding song lists for generations to come. It is probably one of the best love songs ever and it never fails to make me emotional, however, most people feel the same way. For the Elvis fan that wants to find a way to incorporate his music into their big day but also seem like a super fan by using a lesser known song, give “The Wonder of You” a try! Another lovely Elvis song but without as much recognition.

OBVIOUSLY if any of the popular songs I mentioned happen to be your wedding song or on your list for your future wedding, please don’t think this post is throwing any shade towards popular songs. Your wedding, your music and no one can say a thing. I figured it would be fun to just give some options for folks who want to switch it up or try something a little different.
